I was lucky to have my first viewings of Dr. No, Goldfinger, and You Only Live Twice in the cinema. When I saw You Only Live Twice it was part of a double feature of it and The Spy Who Loved Me. I can't remember if I noticed then the similarities between the two films but now it's the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think of either film.

I still want to see James Bond fight a samurai-armored Blofeld, as he did in the YOLT novel. Since we'll likely never see this in a film, I decided to draw the scene. I thought I might have had a chance to spot Vic Armstrong as leading the assault, but there's a lot going on, so couldn't quite make him out. Oddly, The Spy Who Loved Me, which of course is almost a remake of YOLT, is one of my favourite Bond films. (I was struck by just how closely TSWLM follows YOLT, down to the shutter and map/globe in the control rooms of the volcano and tanker.) Perhaps the story of TSWLM has a little more coherence, and the film is lifted by Roger Moore's occasional 'serious acting'. Or perhaps I like TSWLM simply because Roger Moore was the incumbent Bond when I was growing up. Who knows.Edward Biddulphhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13958778222555710461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-117416349695015821.post-70693515271045374692014-01-28T13:31:52.731+00:002014-01-28T13:31:52.731+00:00Very well written and interesting piece as always,...Very well written and interesting piece as always, Edward. I agree with your low assessment of YOLT - it's in my bottom three but it is an epic and is very watchable nonetheless. I think the Fleming source novel was probably unfilmable at the time, but we may see it faithfully adapted one day - who knows? Incidentally, the scene where the ninjas come down on ropes from the volcano false crater roof is Pierce Brosnan's favourite scene from any of the Bond films.
